Smart Switches in Kuwait: What to Check Before You Buy
A smart switch replaces your existing light switch inside the same back box, turning the home smart without breaking walls or changing the light fittings. But three things decide whether it will work in your home.
1. The neutral wire — the most important point
Smart switches need permanent power to stay connected to the network, and that requires a neutral wire (usually blue or black) inside the switch box. Newer buildings in Kuwait usually have one, while in older apartments the neutral may run straight to the light fitting without passing through the switch.
How do you check it? Switch off the power at the distribution board, remove the switch faceplate, photograph the wiring inside the box and send us the photo on WhatsApp. If you see only two wires there is probably no neutral; three wires or more is a good sign.
2. Switch box depth
A smart switch is thicker than an ordinary one because it carries a circuit board. It needs a back box at least 35 mm deep. The standard faceplate size in Kuwait is 86x86 mm, which is the size of the Simon i7 switches in the store.
3. Zigbee versus WiFi
Simon i7 switches use Zigbee, which is more dependable than WiFi because each switch acts as a repeater, so coverage improves as you add switches and the router is not loaded with dozens of devices. In return, Zigbee needs one central hub in the home.
Lighting and flicker
Cheap LED bulbs may flicker or stay faintly lit with smart switches if the switch draws a small current through the circuit. Having a neutral wire solves this completely; if it persists, the cause is usually the bulb driver rather than the switch.
Curtain and shutter switches
A curtain switch differs from a light switch: it has three outputs (open, close, common) and locks one direction before releasing the other to protect the curtain motor. The curtain motor must be an AC type running on 220V.
